Newsletter: Summer is here!

Just Hang Up

But how will I know that I’m being scammed? Telemarketers, fake “grandchildren,” romance scammers, and your average scammer will often intimidate using high pressure tactics. For example: deals that are too good to be true, an emergency, or demands to make big purchases using your credit card (several gift cards or big-ticket items). Some might even say they have your banking information and will take it all if you don’t buy what they’re asking. Basically, anything to play on your emotions. Hang up!

If you receive a call, email, or text from a family member or friend in trouble, reach out to another loved one to confirm the situation. Don’t give out personal information; beware of upfront “fees,” requests to purchase gift cards, and fake links from a bank, the CRA, or cellular company. NO ONE from St. Andrew’s, the CRA, your bank, or any legitimate phone or internet companies will request that you provide your SIN, credit card information, or to make big-ticket item/gift card purchases. Just hang up!
